New on OCRM: We Now Check Casino Terms Every Month

Most casino reviews tell you about the games, bonuses, payment methods and whether a casino is easy to use. We do all of that too. But there is another part of an online casino that can be just as important and usually gets far less attention: the terms and conditions.

That is why we have introduced OCRM Terms Watch across our casino reviews.

With Terms Watch, we take a closer look at the rules behind each casino. We read through the general terms and conditions, bonus terms and other relevant policies and pick out ten things we think players should know about.

Some are serious restrictions that could directly affect your money. Others are less dramatic, but still useful to know before you deposit, claim a bonus or make a withdrawal.

Why we started checking the small print

We spend a lot of time testing and reviewing online casinos for New Zealand players. One thing we have learned over the years is that the headline offer rarely tells the whole story.

A casino might advertise a large welcome bonus, for example, but the full bonus terms can include a maximum bet, restricted games or a much higher wagering requirement than you might expect.

The same applies outside bonuses.

Withdrawal limits, dormant account rules, verification requirements, restrictions on certain payment methods and maximum cash-outs can all be buried several pages into a casino's terms.

We don't think you should need to read thousands of words of legal text just to discover the rules that are most likely to affect you.

So we do it.

For every casino covered by OCRM Terms Watch, our team goes through the available casino and bonus terms and selects 10 points that stand out to us.

We then explain them in normal English.

Not everything we find is a red flag

Terms Watch isn't designed to make every casino look bad.

There is an important difference between an unusual condition and an unfair one. Some rules are fairly standard across the industry. Others are restrictive but clearly explained. Occasionally, we also find terms that are more player-friendly than we expected.

That is why we give the findings different levels of importance.

The higher-impact findings are the ones we think deserve your attention before playing. These could involve things such as wagering requirements, withdrawal restrictions, bonus confiscation rules, maximum bets or conditions that can have a direct impact on your balance.

We also include lower-impact findings. They may not be a reason to avoid a casino, but they can still save you from an unpleasant surprise later.

Our aim is not to produce a list of ten scary-sounding clauses. It is to pick out the ten things we would want to know ourselves before opening an account.

We show you why each rule matters

Finding a clause is only half the job.

Casino terms are often written for legal or compliance purposes, not for somebody who simply wants to know what happens when they deposit NZ$50 and claim a bonus.

For each Terms Watch finding, we therefore explain why it matters in practice.

If a casino has an unusual maximum cash-out rule, for example, we explain what that could mean if you land a large win. If a bonus has a maximum bet restriction, we explain why you need to know about it before changing your stake.

Where possible, we also show the supporting evidence and point to the part of the casino's terms where the rule comes from.

You don't have to take our interpretation on trust. You can see what we found and where we found it.

And we check again every month

There is another problem with casino terms: they change.

A review can be completely accurate when we publish it and still become outdated when a casino changes its bonus rules, withdrawal policy or general terms a few weeks later.

OCRM Terms Watch is our way of keeping a much closer eye on that.

Every month, we check the terms again and compare what is currently published. This gives us a chance to spot new conditions, changed limits and other differences that could be relevant to players.

It also means Terms Watch isn't intended as a one-off summary of the small print we happened to see when we first reviewed a casino.

It is an ongoing part of how we review casinos.

Of course, our ten findings are not a replacement for reading the complete terms and conditions yourself. Casinos can have hundreds of individual rules and some will only apply to particular promotions, games, countries or payment methods.

But we think Terms Watch makes the important parts much easier to find.

A bonus percentage or a five-star rating can tell you something about a casino. The small print tells you what happens when you actually use it.

And from now on, we're keeping a much closer eye on that too.
